This is a photo of me from a while ago…before so many things happened. Before I was diagnosed with cancer, before my marriage fell apart and came back together, before a devastating inner ear injury that changed the course of my music career, and before Covid shut down promotion of my debut album. Whenever I see this picture, I’m reminded of how much life can change but I’m also reminded of how much stronger I am now.

This piece was done from a photo was taken in the Fall of 2019 near her school as she was enjoying the nice weather and practicing outdoors after a recording session with her accompanist. Although Amelia is just nine years old, sharing music with other artists, audiences, and the wider community is a big part of her life, and the current situation has completely changed her creative process and relationship with the instrument.

Musicians all over the world are having an extremely hard time during Covid-19. But despite the difficulties, we keep smiling and tune our instruments to prepare for the better days ahead.

Despite the serious look on my face, this is me happily soaking it all in…the energy from the crowd, the vibration, and the privilege to get to do something I love for people who give it right back to me. Little did I know this was the last time we would play a “normal” show.

Music connects people. This function of music continued to exist even in those difficult and crazy times. I saw how all the artists searched for the online contact and developed new communication skills. In my case I also learned in this time how to record and use the computer to create videos.
Still I am surely happy that this time is finally finding an end and real connection can start again. I am happy for the face to face lessons, for live music and for interaction without a limit in between. Every phase in our lives can teach us things and make us explore and express our real selves. In hard times we mostly learn and in good times we can also enjoy.

Not being able to have as many in-person gatherings lead me to focus most of my work online between school performances, recording for other artists, and performing concerts for events.
