The E♭ alto clarinet stands as one of the most expressive voices in the clarinet family, bridging the gap between soprano and bass with its rich, woody tone. This watercolor celebrates that distinctive character, capturing the instrument’s elegant curves and intricate keys in luminous washes of deep purple, blue, and seafoam green.

Rendered with careful attention to the subtle mechanics that shape each note, this piece honors both the instrument’s craftsmanship and the musicians who bring it to life. The vertical composition emphasizes the clarinet’s graceful proportions while adding sophisticated presence to any wall.

Seldom spotlighted. The alto clarinet is the rarely featured middle voice between the B♭ and bass clarinet. June, a past client, sent reference photos of her newly purchased instrument to me.

A luminous study of an uncommon woodwind: transparent violets and teal washes, fine linework, and soft edge blooms on the smooth hot press surface. The composition isolates the curved lower section so the keys, pads, and bell flare become a quiet, lyrical, slightly mysterious vertical statement.

  • The English horn has a voice that is rich, mellow, and unmistakably soulful. This watercolor painting captures a close-up view of its intricate keys and glowing wooden body, rendered in shades of deep raspberry with washes of lime green and gold drifting through the background.

Part of my music series, this small piece celebrates the artistry and elegance of woodwinds instruments. Each wash reflects my love of the fine details: the curves of the keys, the shine of the metalwork, the way the instrument feels alive when music flows through it.

This color for the English horn is one I wouldn’t have painted without Max: a previous collector: who emailed to request a bright green color. Now that it’s finished, it feels perfectly at home here in Richmond.
